8 Great Personal Finance Sites
8 Great Personal Finance Sites
There’s lots of online information about personal finance. If you’re looking for advice on budgeting or investing, you’ll find plenty. If you want quotes for loans or insurance, they’re available. If you need help getting out of debt, you can find it online.
Predictably, some of the personal finance resources online are better than others. Some are frankly self-serving, trying to sell you some product or service. Others give information freely. Some of the information is good and some is not so good. You have to evaluate and discriminate when looking for authority and accuracy in personal finance information. After all, it’s your money that you’ll be risking if you follow bad advice. So be careful out there.
We can’t hope to list all the good online sites for personal finance. There are just too many. But here’s a short list to get you started in the right direction. We’ve included a few of the standard mega-sites plus some really good ones that are not so well known.
Necessary Virtues Personal Finance
http://finance.necessaryvirtues.com/
Specializes in information about how to manage your money efficiently and live a prosperous life. Offers several full-length books as free downloads, including these titles: “Solving the Money Puzzle: Personal Finance Made Simple,” “The Science of Getting Rich,” “Money for Life,” and the classic, “Think and Grow Rich.” Also offers free newsletter, “Your Money Plan.”
MSN Money
http://moneycentral.msn.com/
Specializes in information for investors, including free stock quotes and analysis tools. Also has sections on planning, banking, and taxes. Good investment advice columns and features. Some analysis tools require Internet Explorer for best results. (The site is owned by Microsoft.)
CNN Money
http://money.cnn.com/
More breadth than MSN Money but less depth on investing. Covers many areas and has quite a bit of unique content from Fortune and Money magazines. (This is a Time-Warner site so there is common ownership.)
Kiplinger.com
http://www.kiplinger.com/
Mostly about investing, but also has good articles on credit management, real estate, insurance, retirement. Do be aware that much of their focus is on selling subscriptions to their various newsletters, like the Kiplinger Report.
Zen Personal Finance
http://www.finance-weblog.com/
This is something completely different, a blog with a unique perspective on personal finance. Has sections on retirement, housing, credit, and investing (a mammoth 30-part series of posts on “How To Think Like Warren Buffet”). Not the place to go for everyday reference, but recommended for browsing.
The Motley Fool
http://www.fool.com/
Specializes in help with investing, particularly in stocks and mutual funds. Information is of high quality, but registration is required to access most of it, and payment is required for parts of the site and for some newsletters.
Yahoo Finance
http://finance.yahoo.com/
There’s a lot here, but most of it is conglomerated by Yahoo from various third-party sources. You’ll have to be discriminating.
Carnival of Personal Finance
http://carnivalofpersonalfinance.com/
A blog carnival that offers weekly collections of recent blog posts on topics like budgeting, saving money, earning money, managing debt, and living below your means. The quality is uneven so be prepared to dig deep.
So there you have it, a quick introduction to some of the best of the web when it comes to personal finance. Some of the big sites made our list as well as some smaller hidden gems. Here’s hoping you find it useful.

AGORACOM Investor Relations Declares “E-Mail Promotion Is Dead” At PIPEs Conference In New York
George Tsiolis, President of AGORACOM declares the death of e-mail promotions and the severe penalties, both regulatory and within the investment community, for small-cap companies that continue to engage in it. Toronto, ON (PRWEB) October 23, 2006
AGORACOM Investor Relations (http://www.agoracom.com) today announced its investor relations sponsorship and key note presentation at the 4th Annual PIPEs Conference 2006 being held in New York City at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on November 7 and 8, 2006.
During his key note speach, George Tsiolis, President of AGORACOM will declare the death of e-mail promotions and demonstrate how small-cap companies can run great investor relations campaigns in a Web 2.0 world.
Mr. Tsiolis will discuss the evolution of Web 2.0 and the credible, valuable and cost-efficient ways for small-cap companies to reach investors faster and better than ever before. Specific topics will include:
Google - Precision Target Every Potential Investor Interested In Your Specific Industry and Company.
Yahoo Finance - Marketing On The Web’s Largest Finance Property Is A Gold Mine of Potential New Investors.
Blogs - Unleash The Power of True Viral Marketing To Spread Your Message.
Podcasting - How Small-Caps Can Leverage The iTunes Phenomena To Attract New Investors.
Community - Take The Time To Build One and Reap The Benefits For Years To Come
Cost - Web 2.0 Provides A Bigger Bang For The Buck.
Leading into the conference, Mr. Tsiolis stated “The Web 2.0 phenomenon has created the greatest small-cap investor relations opportunity since the web first emerged in the mid 90’s. The key is getting small-cap companies to realize that spam e-mail campaigns are more costly in terms of both dollars and reputation, while Web 2.0 is significantly more rewarding in terms of success and credibility. My job will be to drive this point home at the PIPEs conference and continue doing so until all small-caps engage in IR best practices.”
The PIPEs Conference is touted as the largest small cap event on Wall Street, with more than 1,000 financial professionals expected to attend representing institutional investors, investment banks, financial analysts and media.

Peter Schiff’s views as an author, investor and free market idealist are no secret: Abolish the Fed, buy gold and avoid the dollar. With that in mind, Sunday night was something of a dream come true for the President of Euro Pacific Capital. Thanks To Princeton University’s Business Today, Schiff went head to head in New York City with St. Louis Federal Reserve President James Bullard and former Federal Reserve Vice Chairman Alan Blinder in a panel titled, “Challenges of the Global Slowdown: Redefining Government Regulation.” It might as well have been called “Schiff Blames the Fed for the Financial Crisis.” We caught up with Schiff after the panel to discuss some of the points mentioned in greater detail.

“The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.” That quote might apply to Yahoo when you look at all the mindshare that Google has garnered of late. It’s almost as if Yahoo is irrelevant and Google owns the search world. Not quite, and Paul Bausch’s new book Yahoo! Hacks - Tips & Tools for Living on the Web Frontier reminded me of all the good and incredibly valuable things you can do with Yahoo…
Contents: Search; Services; Communicating; Web Services; Applications; Webmastering; Index
Like all Hacks titles, you have a number of cool tips and tricks that you can do using Yahoo as your technology starting point. In this case, there’s 100 of them that cover a wide range of topics. For instance, tip #39 - Monitor Your Commute shows how Yahoo can provide updated traffic conditions overlaying a map of your driving commute. Even better, those traffic updates can be formatted in RSS and put on your My Yahoo page. I did that one right away. Tip #83 - Randomize Your Windows Desktop Background shows how, using Yahoo’s web services API and some VBA code, you can create a random Windows wallpaper each day. Just hope you don’t choose a search term that isn’t “work safe”. :) The whole Web Services chapter shows how you can access Yahoo’s API using a variety of languages such as Perl, PHP, Python and a few others. Once you get the basic core structure down, you open up a whole universe of possibilities in terms of programmatic integration of Yahoo into your applications. This is really cool stuff…
I’ve been just as guilty as the next person of getting all “Google”-y eye’d at other search engines and forgetting the site that opened up a whole world of internet realities. Many of the things we take for granted now were ground-breaking ideas that Yahoo was pushing in the early days. Having two strong competitors in the search arena will lead to even more innovative thinking as they play off of each other. I can see how the Yahoo! Hacks title could go into multiple editions without even trying…
Excellent read with lots of code you can use immediately. If you’ve wandered away from Yahoo for other pastures, perhaps it’s time to wander back and see what other options are out there. Yahoo Hacks will expand your thinking as to what you can do with search engines…

Review by Daniel McKinnon for Yahoo! Hacks

When Yahoo! was created in 1994 by Jerry Yang and David Filo it was the simplest of web sites. Just a collection of web pages laid out in a simple unordered list, the entire Yahoo! web site was only a handful of pages with only a single, simple use: to list sites on the web separated out by the content they provided. Probably when someone today thinks of Yahoo! the first thing they think of is that it is a search engine. Well the 1st generation of the Yahoo! web site didn’t even have that. There wasn’t even a form field present, the only thing being a bunch of hyperlinks which navigated to more hyperlinks for the few sites that were in existence back in the day.
My what changes a decade brings.
When you think of the Internet today, probably the first couple of web sites that come to mind are eBay, Google, amazon and Yahoo!. It is safe to say that with thousands of employees and millions upon millions of revenue that Yahoo! is one of the greatest success stories on the web, and to think that only 10+ years ago this site was just a simple list that grew into so much more. Yahoo! has evolved to not only provide a way of searching the Internet, but it is now a portal site that provides News, Weather, Sports, Games… basically if you can think of something that you can find on the Internet then Yahoo! is a great place to go to start your web experience. There is so much to do and so many places to go when you use Yahoo! that it can become mind-boggling and that is where “Yahoo! Hacks” can be used to make your net experience the best it can be.
Providing 100 tips and tricks of how to best use Yahoo! to your advantage, Paul Bausch pulls no punches and doesn’t skimp on the details. From learning how to use and customize ‘My Yahoo!’ to setting up and controlling your mail to setting your own personal TV listings, you can learn how to do this with this guide. From tracking your investments to created advanced searches that remember personalized settings to installing Yahoo! Messenger, you will learn the ins and outs with this book. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to discussing all that Yahoo! Hacks has to offer. RSS, blogging, Calendar, sharing photos… the list goes on and on.
After reading Yahoo! Hacks you will soon feel like there is so much to offer from Yahoo! that you could do everything you needed to at one web site and never have to go anywhere else! Now with this guide you can get the most out of your Yahoo! experience and have fun while doing it.
This is what Hack books are supposed to be about!! For all Yahoo! enthusiasts out there who want to learn how to use Yahoo! to the fullest, this is the book for you!!
***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

This book contains a hundred hacks to get Yahoo to work the way you want it to work. These hacks include tips for getting the results you want from a Yahoo search, dealing with advertiser cookies, tracking your stocks, getting news feeds and news crawlers, using Yahoo groups, programming Yahoo using various languages including Perl, Java, PHP, and VBScript and even how to plot multiple points on map at the same time. Of course the biggest question for many people is how to get your site listed at Yahoo and there is even a tip for that. Yahoo! Hacks is a highly recommended book to anyone who uses Yahoo or wants to know how to really master it.
Review by John R. Vacca for Yahoo! Hacks
Rating:
If you’re not very knowledgeable on how to use, expand, personalize, and tweak Yahoo!, this book is for you! Author Paul Bausch, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that will help you do just that, in ways you never dreamed possible.
Bausch, begins by showing you how to become a Yahoo! power searcher by taking advantage of meta keywords in order to return more relevant results. Then, he shows you some unique ways on how to use Yahoo! Web Services, including monitoring your commute for problems, watching TV schedules automatically for appearances by your favorite celebrities, and visualizing your music collection. The author continues by showing you how to use the hacks to reach out and touch someone. Next, he introduces you to the backdoor that Yahoo! has opened for developers. Then, the author shows you how people are using Yahoo! data in their own applications and have a bit of fun in the process. Finally, he shows you how to get listed and introduces you to other Yahoo! components you can plug into your site.
You can read this excellent book from cover to cover if you like, but each hack stands on its own. Here, the author intends to show you what’s possible when you view Yahoo! as a platform and inspire your inner hacker to take a new look at Yahoo!.
He is an idiot. Nuf said.
@planetcave and Megaspeculator
so how about the freefall in gold.
looks to me like it has been pretty sustainable compared to your prediction 3 months ago…

god the next “peter schiff was right” will have a lot of material….
We love you Peter!

I remember when an ounce of pot was about the same price as gold. 350 I think,
silly me . I lost on that one as no one is interested in my 20 year old pot now.:-)
@tommy6238
Are you an idiot? Nowhere does he say he wants to bomb Iran. He says bombing a structure would destroy a threat of that structure.
he’s right on.
Fed Reserve Guy named Blinder? This debate was over before it began. Schiff for President.
Add the tool on the right at the beginning to the line of tools that were wrong from 2002 to now going against Peter. Some people never learn.
Iran is on borrowed time no matter who gets elected. The professional class is emigrating at an alarming rate.
You’ll be sorry you got on that boat when it sinks to the bottom of the ocean, I got out of the stock market about a month ago, but the downside in commodities is small in comparison to the downside in the dollar. I am half invested in commodities (silver and agricultural) and half in cash. What is this rally in comparison with the dramatic decline over the last 8 months?
tommy6238 (— IRAN — country which never invaded anyone in 500 years …
USA invasion record for past 500 years …
Serbia 1999
Afganistan 2001
Iraq 2003 .
Iran Next ????
That doesn’t make Peter Schiff a Neocon, he doesn’t want to invade Iran, only if he believed they were a threat, I don’t think Peter Schiff believes it will be in the country’s interest to invade Iran, but if he had to he would do it. I think he was just catering to his audience, In the next sentence he talks about drawing down foreign occupations, and how its bankrupting this country. No he is not a Neocon if anything he’s the complete opposite.
watch?v=73vVEY8zNCE - Schiff is a NEOCON!!! He wants to bomb Iran! Don’t support him!!!
would really love to see this debate in full…anybody got a link?
You can buy much more silver, and it has a much higher growing opportunity than gold.
haha, wait until Monday. The Dems just blew 1.1 trillion dollars…..and cant wait to blow more.
Gold is a buy.
this one is getting started but I think we wil see deflation first.
Btw, most Indians vote with a picture of a political party next to it. It would like you voting for democrat with a picture of a donkey or an elephant for a republican - some democracy. The capitalism and democracy that exists in India is a farce. Kind of like the media machine in the US - pure unadulterated crap.
I’d be careful about trying to catch a falling knife. As far as the dream goes about India being a mass-market due to the fact of it having a representative democracy, there was one giant barrier and its called a caste system. The wealth is extremely concentrated and they’d rather hoard gold and have 50 family members living under one roof while one group controls all the rental income in a given area. In Singapore/Malaysia they say, “even god can’t make money off an Indian.”
How about the fact that India continues to vote for capitalist democracy? Is that not a future of over 1 billion consumers? There are alot more potential Indian consumers then there ever were American consumers.
Actually, it’s a buying opportunity. a good time to jump on before 1600
It looks like the MegaSpeculator just took a lot of money from the Schiff boys. Just checked the exchange, gold is down in a big way and getting ready for a free fall. Now would you bubble maniacs do yourself and your loved ones a favor and cash out already. Giving it all back to the man is not too wise.
Planet Cave is RIGHT….Gold is NOT money, it never will be, the powers that be have made sure that their fiat currencies are the medium of exchange, and if you think gold id going higher, well, god bless the fools……its just another bubble, in fact Im short gold in a BIG way
No way I would fall for this, if it sounds to good to be true then it probably is.
To my knowledge,Yahoo! Finance does not process any sales transactions. Finance is primarily an information service. Yahoo! has other services available such as Auctions and Classifieds to assist Yahoo! users in selling items.
